|Employers know that tobacco using employees use more insurance, leave time and are sick more often than non-smokers. So many employers want to reduce their cost and offer employees some kind of help to become tobacco free.
If you are an employer considering the options, take a look at some of these facts:
The Mississippi Tobacco Quitline is available to any Mississippian with a telephone, but many employers want to know if their employees are participating, how they are doing and if they are quitting. An individual contract with the Tobacco Quitline will provide many check and balance opportunities for an employer.
- One out of every two smokers will die prematurely from a smoking related illness
- Tobacco using employees have higher medical and dental insurance claims
- Tobacco users cost about 40% more than non-tobacco users in medical costs
- Average cost per cigarette break per tobacco using employee per day is $9.38
- Tobacco users have longer hospital stays and higher costs for procedures
- Tobacco users spend about 18.2 accrued days per year away from their duty station to engage in tobacco related activities
The Tobacco Quitline offers services to businesses, hospitals and industries who agree that employees need something in return for the decision to make a work environment tobacco free. Those employers who decide to offer free nicotine replacement (NRT), regularly request some accountability on the part of the employee for taking advantage of the program. By requiring the eligible participants to be registered with the Tobacco Quitline for continued support, the employer is including accountability on the part of the participants. Research shows that NRT with support is better than 50% more successful than NRT alone.
The Tobacco Quitline not only offers the support services, but can do screening to ensure the participants are physically appropriate to participate, can provide weekly reports for qualified participants who are complying with the specifics of the program and provide monthly reports on productivity and quit rates.
The charges for these specialized services are calculated on the basis of number of participants, ancillary administrative services and extended length of support time. Providers for the nicotine replacement have agreed to pass on the reduced amount to employers who agree to contract individually with the Tobacco Quitline.
